Measurement Guide

Each of our products includes a general size chart to help you choose the best fit. As sizing may vary slightly between designs, we also provide a model fitting chart showing the sizes worn by our dog models for that specific item, along with a detailed product measurement chart for precise dimensions.

How to Measure

To find the ideal size for your pet, we recommend taking four key measurements: upper neck, lower neck, chest girth, and back length. You’ll need a measuring tape or a piece of string and a ruler.

Use the guidelines below to determine your pet’s size. If your pet’s measurements fall between two sizes, choose the smaller size for a snug fit or the larger size for a looser fit. If their chest and back measurements indicate different sizes, go with the chest measurement.

Standing Position. Keep Your Pet’s Neck Straight Up.

Upper Neck

Middle portion of the neck where a dog collar would normally rest.

Lower Neck

Connecting point of the torso and neck.

Chest

Widest part of the torso, just behind the front legs.

Back Length

From the base of the neck to just above the base of the tail.

Dog Sizing Questions

How do I measure my dog’s chest girth?
Wrap a soft measuring tape (or a piece of string measured against a ruler) around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs, while your dog stands. Keep it snug with room for two fingers. Chest girth is the most important measurement for apparel — match it to the General Size Chart above to find your size.
What is chest girth on a dog?
Chest girth is the distance all the way around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs (sometimes called chest circumference). It’s the key number for sizing a dog sweater, coat, or vest, because it captures how deep and round the body is — two dogs of the same length can need different sizes. Measure the chest first, then check the chart above.
How do I measure my dog’s neck girth?
Wrap the tape around the base of the neck where a collar sits. For apparel we use the lower neck (where the neck meets the chest); for collars and leashes we use the upper neck, higher up. Keep it snug with room for two fingers, then compare to the Wear or Walk chart above.
What size clothing does a mini dachshund wear?
A mini dachshund usually takes a size S in both our Wear and Walk ranges. Because dachshunds have a long back and a deep, narrow chest, always confirm with an actual chest-girth measurement — a longer-bodied dachshund may need to size up on back length even when the chest fits S. Other small breeds (Westies, Whippets, Boston Terriers) generally take S too.
What if my dog is between two sizes?
Choose the smaller size for a snug fit or the larger size for a roomier one. When the chest and back measurements point to different sizes, go by the chest — it’s the measurement most likely to limit fit. Deep-chested breeds (like French Bulldogs) and long-backed breeds (like Dachshunds) are the most common in-between cases. Still unsure? Email info@cavecanempet.com with your measurements.
